Turun Lääketiedepäivät is Turunmaan Duodecim-seura’s annual continuing education event for physicians and medical students, and the largest of its kind in Southwest Finland. Courses, lunch lectures, and the exhibition run at Logomo on 4 and 5 November. Sooma, a Finnish medical device company, will be exhibiting.
Transcranial direct current stimulation, or tDCS, passes a weak constant current between two electrodes placed on the scalp. The current is too low to trigger nerve cells to fire on its own. Instead, it shifts how easily the neurons under the electrodes respond to whatever they are already doing, and in depression, the target is the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. The patient stays awake and alert throughout; no anesthesia is involved, and the most common side effects are a tingling or itching sensation under the electrodes and short-lived redness of the skin.
Sooma tDCS is a CE-marked system for delivering this treatment for depression, developed in Helsinki and used in psychiatric clinics across Europe. In Finland, it reaches patients in two ways. Providers offer it as home therapy, with the treating clinician setting the protocol and overseeing the treatment course, while the patient conducts the daily sessions at home. Clinicians may also direct patients to buy a device directly from Sooma for self-guided treatment. Each session takes under half an hour, and tDCS fits into a treatment plan alongside medication and therapy for patients who cannot tolerate or would rather avoid pharmacological treatment
