Transcranial direct current and transcranial magnetic stimulations for chronic pain

  • Pharmacotherapeutics have not succeeded to treat chronic pain sufficiently. Thus, alternative approaches need to be investigated.
  •  tDCS and TMS are well-tolerated and effective treatment alternatives to alleviate chronic pain.
  • Standardized stimulation parameters have been identified with the recommendation for repeated maintenance stimulation to ensure that the analgesic effect is sustained beyond discontinuation of therapy.
  • The optimization of the parameters should be the aim of future research.
